A code proposal is used when Tariff Code Compliance generates a new classification recommendation.

Backfills use code proposals. If your catalog has many missing codes, you can classify products individually or use product-type grouping to reduce the number of proposals needed.
A tariff-version check that keeps an existing exact code creates no proposal and uses none of your proposal allowance. Only a generated replacement is metered. The plan configuration shown in Shopify is always the pricing source of truth. See the verified tariff-update examples.

Are Free and Catalog Watch proposals the same quality?
Yes. Free and paid proposals use the same classification engine. The Free plan is limited by quantity, not quality.
What is a watched product?
A watched product is an active Shopify product included in catalog monitoring. Catalog Watch monitors watched products for missing codes, new product creation, product and variant changes, and classification-relevant updates.
What is a code proposal?
A code proposal is a new HS or HTS classification recommendation generated by Tariff Code Compliance. Each proposal includes the recommended code, rationale, and rejected alternatives so your team can review before approving.
Do backfills count as code proposals?
Yes. If products are missing HS or HTS codes, generating classifications for those products uses code proposals. You can reduce backfill cost by grouping similar products by product type and applying one approved classification across matching products.
Does every product update use a code proposal?
No. Catalog Watch monitors product updates, but only code-relevant changes need a new proposal. Inventory-only and bookkeeping updates usually do not require a new HS or HTS code proposal.
Does the app automatically update Shopify?
You choose the operating mode. Manual keeps every proposal in review. Same code can auto-approve a proposal that matches a code you previously approved for that product. All proposals can approve and write every eligible generated proposal back automatically.

Yes. When a new U.S. HTS version becomes active, Catalog Watch automatically checks each eligible product's exact numeric code. If the code still exists, it stays unchanged with no proposal or proposal usage. If it no longer exists, Tariff Code Compliance generates one current-version proposal. Generated proposals count against the 50 included per Shopify billing period, then the configured $0.50 additional-proposal tier applies. Your approval setting still controls Shopify writeback.
