Find and Fix the Hidden Gaps in Your Shopify Catalog

Start with red, work through yellow, aim for green

Think of Catalog Health as a prioritized checklist. It puts the gaps most likely to block a usable classification in red, follow-up data or review work in yellow, and complete product records in green. Click any bucket or dimension and Catalog Health automatically finds every product that currently matches it.

• Critical (red): the product is missing an HS code, or its stored code does not exist in the current version of the U.S. Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS). Start here.
• Needs attention (yellow): the product has a classification but is missing country of origin or weight, changed since its proposal was created, or has a proposal waiting for review or writeback.
• Compliant (green): the product has an HS code, country of origin, and weight, with no product change or pending proposal left to review. Green is good.

Example 1: find every product missing an HS code

Click Missing HS codes and Catalog Health automatically filters the catalog to the products that need a classification. Open a product, choose Generate New Code Proposal, and review the recommended code, reasoning, and alternatives before approval. Once the approved code is written to Shopify, that product leaves the missing-code list.

Example 2: complete the customs data around the code

An HS code is necessary. It is not sufficient. You also need country of origin and weight sent with the product data. Click Missing country of origin to find every gap, choose Set Country, and confirm Write to Shopify. Use Missing weight and Set Weight for the same job.

Example 3: tariff schedules move; your catalog does not

Tariff schedules do not change on one neat annual clock. The U.S. HTS can be revised repeatedly during a single year, as the USITC HTS revision archive shows. The international Harmonized System normally follows a five-year review cycle. Codes can be added, split, renumbered, or retired. Shopify keeps the old code until someone changes it, turning a routine shipment into a last-minute reclassification exercise.

Catalog Health catches that mismatch. Click Code not in current version of Tariff System, generate a new proposal, compare it with the product and the exact current U.S. HTS version, then approve the writeback. Nothing changes in Shopify until you approve it.

Green is good: finish with a compliant catalog

Start with the red products, work through the yellow products, and refresh the summary as each reviewed change reaches Shopify. When every product has the required customs data and no classification work is waiting, the summary becomes 100% compliant. That all-green result is the proof that the review is complete.
