Shopify tariff code workflow
How to Add HS Codes to Shopify Products
If you already know the correct code, add it on the product page, in Shopify's bulk editor, or by CSV. If you do not know the code, classify the product first—entering a value and choosing a defensible classification are different jobs.

Don't have an HS code yet?
Use Tariff Code Compliance before you reach for an empty Shopify field. Its MCP-powered ChatGPT and Claude workflow helps turn product facts and current tariff evidence into a reviewable classification proposal. For an ongoing catalog, the integrated Tariff Code Compliance Shopify app monitors new and changed products, generates proposals, keeps a person in the approval loop, and applies approved codes.
Three ways to enter a known HS code in Shopify
Choose the entry surface that matches the size of the reviewed update. The screenshots below show Shopify's current admin controls for each path.
1. Add the code on the product page
In Shopify admin, open Products, choose the product, and scroll to Shipping. Expand More details, select the Country/Region of origin, and enter the reviewed value in Harmonized System (HS) code. This is the clearest path for one product or a small correction because the product details stay beside the field. Save only after confirming the code and origin belong to that product.

2. Apply reviewed codes with the bulk editor
From Products, select the products you want to update and click Bulk edit. Open Columns; under Shipping, select Harmonized system code. Enter the approved value for each product or variant, review the bounded set, and then save. This is useful when the classification decisions already exist and a catalog team needs a spreadsheet-like application step.

3. Update customs information with CSV
For a controlled spreadsheet workflow, go to Settings → Taxes and duties. In Customs information, open More actions and choose Export with CSV. Shopify's duties and import taxes CSV includes Country of origin and HS code columns. Preserve the exported headers and identifiers, edit only reviewed values, test a bounded sample, and return through Import with CSV before treating a large update as complete.

Shopify's current help center documents the product-page and bulk-editor paths and its duties and taxes guidance covers bulk editor and CSV workflows.
Country and region-specific codes need their own review
A six-digit HS subheading is the internationally shared base, while an importing country can extend it with a longer local code. That extra detail places the product in the destination's own tariff and statistical schedule—the level customs declarations and shipping documents may require. Reusing one market's longer code in another can place the product in the wrong national schedule.
On the product page, open the overflow menu beside the HS code and choose Add HS codes by country/region. In the modal, select a country or region from your configured Markets, enter its regional code, use Add country/region if you need another destination, and then click Add.

The U.S. extension is the HTS. Read more about the difference between HS and HTS codes.
Data entry is not classification research
Shopify can store a code. It does not establish that the code fits the product. Classification turns product facts—material, construction, function, intended user, and other details—into a position in the relevant tariff hierarchy.
If the code came from an old spreadsheet, a supplier's short description, or another product that merely looks similar, pause before importing it. Inspect the current tariff context in the Tariff Code Compliance Explorer or use Tariff Code Compliance with Claude to run a product-specific classification.
Simplify your operations with Tariff Code Compliance for Shopify
- Research every product: Tariff Code Compliance can research and suggest HS codes and U.S. HTS codes for every product in your catalog.
- Find missing import data: Catalog Health monitoring identifies products missing an HS code, U.S. HTS code, weight, or country of origin.
- Correct the catalog in Shopify: Review and correct those gaps from the Shopify admin panel.

Choose the method that matches the work
- Use the product page for one known, reviewed code.
- Use the bulk editor for a bounded set of known, reviewed codes.
- Use CSV when a controlled spreadsheet import is already part of your catalog process.
- Use a classification workflow when the code is missing, uncertain, inherited, or destination-specific.
Whichever entry method you use, plan to revisit codes when products change. Tariff codes are not a set-and-forget field.
